Check out WSJ’s Real Time Economics site which provides current economic insight and analysis on economic hot button issues. I was particularly intrigued by this title on the site, “It Took the Telephone 75 Years To Do What Angry Birds Did in 35 Days. But What Does That Mean?” Enjoy!

The game is afoot!

A recent book written by Mary Pilon titled, The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World’s Favorite Board Game, talks about the origins of the famous board game, Monopoly. Most believe it was invented by a Pennsylvanian, Charles Yarrow but that’s not exactly true according to Ms. Pilon’s book. An interview with the author talks about what drew her to write this book and why the game has continued to be popular to this day.

If you were curious to research  the Toy and game industry, the database IBISWorld has a December 2014 industry report.

Happy Workplace = Happy Bottom Line

Mark C. Crowley has written a series of articles for Fast Company dedicated to understanding the movement to create “great workplaces” In this article he explains why keeping employees happy is good for the bottom line. To prove his point he points to Jerome Dodson a portfolio manager for the Parnassus Workplace Fund, a mutual fund that invests exclusively in companies regarded by employees as great places to work. Over the past eight years, the Workplace Fund has had an average return of 9.63%–more than 4% higher than the S&P 500 index in the same time period. “What these companies have proved to Wall Street,” says Dodson, “is that treating employees well, and truly respecting them, consistently leads to far better business performance.”

Although the “Scrum” philosophy was originally developed for use by software developers, Zappos has shown that it can be applied to any short- or long-term project to optimize productivity and results.
